Chiropractic Care in the Antelope Valley

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment for many painful conditions. Patients often seek natural alternatives after trying medicines and not getting any relief. Chiropractors are known for helping things like upper back pain, lower back pain, headaches, back and leg pain, neck pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome, and these issues usually resolve fairly quickly.

The techniques we use in our office include Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson, and SOT and we can easily treat even those patients with severe health issues like osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. As the only chiropractor to offer Class 4 laser therapy in the Antelope Valley, we can also give relief faster than just chiropractic and physical therapy alone would offer.

Because many of our patients work out of the Antelope Valley, we do offer Saturday and evening appointments. If you have an emergency injury, we can usually see you the same day.

While chiropractors are able to diagnose and treat any condition, we don't prescribe drugs or perform surgery. This means that I seek to find the underlying cause of your condition, and through a combination of adjusting, laser therapy, and nutritional counseling can help you heal naturally and without side effects. It may take a little longer to feel relief because we aren't masking the symptoms but the results are long lasting. And since we teach back pain exercises, our patients find that their injuries don't keep recurring.

A brief chiropractic history

Chiropractic is the single most widely used "alternative" treatment here in the U.S. although it's not very alternative any more. And in light of history, it should be considered mainstream, as there are references to manipulation of the spine dating back to the 300 B.C.s in Hippocrates' writings (the "father of medicine").

In 1895, the first chiropractic adjustment was given by D.D. Palmer to a man named Harvey Lillard. Harvey was a janitor in the building in which D.D. worked, and had been deaf for some 20 years following an accident as a younger man. D.D. Palmer was a "magnetic healer" at the time, and a self-studied healer who was interested in the spine and natural healing.

D.D. Palmer gave a thrust into Harvey's spine, and lo and behold, the man's hearing returned within a couple hours. Chiropractic was born!

Chiropractic has been somewhat controversial throughout its history, mainly because people didn't understand why it worked and many medical doctors felt it a threat to their profession.

Nowadays we know why it works, and referrals between chiropractors and other medical professionals are the norm.

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractors consider our job to be a combination of philosophy, art, and science.

The philosophy we live by, and the reason we do what we do is that the body is self healing and self regulating.

Most people won't argue with me there. If you cut your finger, you trust it is going to heal. It's not the bandage or ointment that you put on your finger that does the healing, is it?

Of course not. Those things just protect and keep the cut clean. Your body will make new skin, close the cut, and heal the finger to nearly perfect status without you doing anything at all!

Now this is where the science comes in. The system of the body that controls the healing process is the nervous system. The brain controls everything in the body, and it sends its messages through the spine and out nerves that go to every single cell you have.

The brain and spinal cord are so vitally important, they are completely encased in bone. The skull protects the brain, and 24 vertebrae protect the spinal cord. These vertebrae are movable (if they weren't, you wouldn't be able to bend down to get your sock!). As we move in our daily life and are subjected to the bumps, falls, jars, and stresses, the bones can get "stuck." Now this is a very simplistic way to describe it, because science has proven that the neurology is much more complicated than anyone originally believed, but it's the easiest way to describe why chiropractic works.

When the bones aren't moving properly, it interrupts the signals sent from the brain to the body. And when the system that makes and keeps you healthy has interruptions, do you think you'll be healthier or sicker?

Sicker, right?

So chiropractors adjust the spine to allow the body to do what it does naturally. Keep you healthy!

It's as simple as that.

The art of chiropractic has to do with the individual doctor and the techniques and services they offer. There are hundreds of different adjusting techniques. There are low force techniques designed for infants or the elderly, there are ways to be adjusted that use gravity and your breathing, and of course every doctor learned how to adjust the spine using their hands (although some doctors, and patients! prefer instrument adjusting). In my office, I adjust my patients manually, or with a drop table, or with an adjusting instrument. It depends on the patient, their condition, their preferences, and their overall health.

Below is a list of some commonly treated chiropractic conditions:

  • So how does a spinal adjustment work? Well, chiropractors adjust the spine to remove subluxations. Basically, a subluxation is a fixation within the joint that keeps it from moving properly. It may put pressure directly on a nerve (as little weight as that of a dime can decrease nerve communication by 25% or more!), or it may cause inflammation that affects the joint and surrounding tissues. Either way, these fixations cause problems. Chiropractors are trained to find and remove them, and because they keep the joint moving properly, adjustments are a fantastic osteoarthritis prevention method!
